3 easy steps to maintaining a healthy weight

Diet

We are now three days into the New Year and already, I am seeing the adverts for diet plans and hearing people talk about how they are going to diet to lose weight after the Christmas binge.

There are so many diets out there that its hard to know where to start. The problem with diets though is you have to come off of them!

And hence the so-called yo-yo dieting as you come on and off of your diet trying to maintain a healthy weight.

A much more sensible approach to maintaining a healthy weight is to make lifestyle changes. In reality, there are three simple steps you can take to manage your weight and eat healthily. They are

  1. Eat more vegetables and leafy greens
  2.  Reduce your sugar intake
  3.  Eat a good source of protein

Doing these three things will help you to maintain a healthy weight and will be good for your overall health.

Exercise

Exercise is also an important part of being healthy. When I think about exercise, I think of the three S’s.

  • Strength
  • Stamina
  • Suppleness

A good exercise routine will incorporate all three of these elements and provide you with all-around fitness.

I’m not going to tell you specifically what you should or should not be eating or what exercise regime you need to follow as each of us are different, I will say is that in order to be successful you need to be motivated to change and to maintain a  healthy balanced lifestyle.

Therefore, you do need to work out your motivation for wanting to lose weight or exercise, or both. I like to use the phrase, I want to…… so that….

Here is an example, I want to get fit so that I can enjoy playing with my children on the beach!

I want to lose weight so that I feel better about myself and have more confidence in social situations!

Then you need to imagine yourself doing these things and feel the pleasure of doing so. I think it is also good to put these motivational statements somewhere where you can read them every day.

Here’s to a Happy New Year and a new you!
